Your Battery Pack Assembly Process Can Be Easier. We Can Help.

AcA woman attaching a charging cable to an environmentally friendly, zero emission electric car at home.cording to the International Energy Agency, 6.6 million electric cars were sold in 2021. Although this was only about 9% of the global car market, this number was three times the number of electric cars sold two years earlier.

With this surge in consumer interest, electric vehicles are becoming a greater area of importance for engineering and technological development. More specifically, battery manufacturing automation is becoming a focal point for many automotive manufacturers because batteries are a key component of electric cars.

However, it’s still unavoidably expensive to acquire the materials to make batteries for electric vehicles. As a result, manufacturers are pushing the whole battery pack assembly process to be as economical as possible.

The Benefits of Automation

Many electric vehicle battery manufacturers have already been seeing returns on their investments in integrating solutions into their welding, material handling, and assembly (line) automation processes. These returns most frequently come from reduced error and higher throughput resulting from the precision, accuracy, repeatability, and quality that automation brings.

Automation can integrate into many places throughout your line, from part production to final inspection. Although the electric vehicle industry is developing rapidly, manufacturers don’t need to blindly rush into automation solutions.

By partnering with +Vantage, you can integrate solutions from a top automation company that make the most sense to your business, and then scale appropriately as your operation grows.

Many areas of electric vehicle manufacturing assembly lines can benefit from automation. This includes using robotics to complete material handling, assembly, and welding. While robotics can make electric car manufacturing faster, smarter, and more efficient, it is especially beneficial in electric vehicle battery assembly.

We know end-of-line inspection and testing are crucial to every manufacturer’s quality assurance (QA) process. For precision manufacturers, +Vantage can offer comprehensive geometric and dimensional tolerancing (GD&T) inspection solutions.

EV Batteries and the Necessity of Lightweighting

Lightweighting has been a top priority for auto manufacturers for many years. It provides many all-around benefits for both producers and consumers. The National Center for Biotechnology Information reports, “The automotive lightweighting trends, being driven by sustainability, cost, and performance, … [is creating] enormous demand for lightweight materials and design concepts.”

With the growing interest in vehicle electrification, lightweighting is becoming even more critical. Today, many different (and heavy) materials are needed to assemble electric vehicles, especially their batteries. To produce an actual lightweight electric vehicle, EV manufacturers must solve the dual problems of 1) efficiently manufacturing batteries while 2) ensuring the completed product is still light.

Fortunately, new advances in lightweighting materials and techniques are being introduced almost every day. For example, Giga castings, popularly used by Tesla, are now being used more frequently by other manufacturers to create large subframes, which helps make vehicles lighter. Other parts such as engine radiators, wheels, bumpers, suspension parts, engine cylinder blocks, transmission bodies, hoods, and doors are also being reconfigured to assist with the lightweighting effort.

+Vantage Solutions for Lightweighting

The automotive industry is already heavily automated, and that trend is predicted to continue in the foreseeable future. Automotive parts and battery manufacturers must consistently and rapidly produce top-quality products to compete.

In the automotive industry, automation ensures that stringent precision and safety guidelines can be met without sacrificing efficiency. As we’ve already seen, the abundance of new technologies is already changing how structural parts are produced, and +Vantage is here with advanced automation solutions in:
